The Waste Management Division maintains files on approximately 177 old landfill sites. These sites were operated by Hillsborough County, its municipalities, or private entities. Excavation of and/or construction on solid waste-filled areas requires a Director’s Authorization from the agency.

A Director’s Authorization might entail engineering controls, landfill gas monitoring and mitigation, proper disposal of excavated solid waste, and the prevention of the impoundment of storm water on solid waste.
